Pollinator Gardens

Pollinator Gardens

The SRRWD Pollinator Garden Program is intended to create pockets of diverse pollinator habitat across the watershed. Pollinator gardens are designed to support pollinators throughout the summer and act as a site for overwintering. This means lots of variety in plants: different colours, bloom times, and flower shapes. Leaving plant residue and leaf litter in the garden creates a site for pollinators to overwinter.

This is a pilot project available for the year of 2026. This program provides $750 for homeowners to install a pollinator garden or improve an existing bed for pollinators. The funding is available to cover native perennial plants, soil and amendments, site prep, and garden edging. Requirements include leaving plant residue for overwinter nesting, prioritizing diversity, and not using chemicals for ongoing maintenance.

What Should You Plant?

When starting any garden it’s good to consider the characteristics of the location. What type of soil you have, sun exposure, and moisture levels. We have used both Prairie Shore Botanicals and Prairie Originals for our office projects and highly recommend you use them as resources. Their websites have great detail about the plants if you want to select them yourself or their staff can give you their suggestions. For a pollinator garden it is important to consider the bloom times and colours of your plant selection.
